3 Tips For A Smoother Move
Most people know that the ideal situation when moving would be to rent a moving van and have someone else take care of the difficult task of packing and moving household goods, but due to budget constraints or other reasons, its not always feasible. So you might find it necessary to rent a van or truck for your move. The following are some tips to make your do-it-yourself move a little easier.
1) Make sure you understand the type of truck you need and what is required to rent it.
Make reservations with the rental truck company early.
Confirm vehicle size and capacity with the rental company
Understand the terms for rental of the truck and return policy.
Verify any additional costs.
o Insurance and deductibles
o Drop-off charges
o Calculate fuel expenses
If you are moving to another town, make sure there is a drop-off company in the town you are moving to.
2) Obtain all necessary supplies for moving and packing.
In order to move and protect your personal items make sure you obtain these necessary supplies.
o Loading ramp ( or it may be a feature on the truck)
o Dollies (floor and appliance) for moving the large items in your household.
o Padding or heavy blankets to protect large items.
o Rope to secure your load properly.
Also, to assure that your belongings are protected, make sure you obtain these items for packing smaller items.
o Cardboard boxes of various sizes
o Unprinted newsprint paper which is usually sold in Office Supply warehouses. Newspaper will work as well, but it usually leaves ink smears on the items you are packing.
o Tissue paper
o Masking tape, packing tape and string
o Permanent marking pens for labeling. Make sure you clearly label boxes with the rooms where they should be taken when unloaded.
o Specialty boxes for delicate items (i.e. china, crystalware, expensive portraits), these specialty boxes can be pricey so buy them if you own these above mentioned types of items.
3) Follow these guidelines to load heavy items carefully
Disassemble what you can. Check sofas, large chairs and dining tables to see if legs can be removed to fit furniture through narrow doors, halls or stairways.
Load heavy furniture and appliances first.
Pad delicate items such as large mirrors, etc. with light blankets or sheets and secure with masking tape or string.
Secure Load properly with nylon rope, or bungee cords. This will prevent your load from wobbling and potentially damaging adjacent items.
Keep these tips in mind and it should make your move a whole lot easier and hassle free.
